Florida Stateâs Mike Norvell âdisgusted,â Jordan Travis âheartbrokenâ at CFP snub
Florida State coach Mike Norvel said he is “disgusted.” Star Jordan Travis is “heartbroken.”
The Seminoles became the first undefeated Power 5 conference champion to be left out of the College Football Playoff on Sunday after the CFP committee chose one-loss Alabama to be the No. 4 seed over the ACC champs.
The reaction at the Florida State watch party said it all.
“I am disgusted and infuriated with the committee’s decision today to have what was earned on the field taken away because a small group of people decided they knew better than the results of the games,” Norvell said in a statement released on “X,” the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. “What is the point of playing games? Do you tell players it is OK to quit if someone goes down? Do you not play a senior on Senior Day for fear of injury? Where is the motivation to schedule challenging non-conference games? We are not only an undefeated P5 conference champion, but we also played two P5 non-conference games away from home and won both of them. I don’t understand how we are supposed to think this is an acceptable way to evaluate a team.”
The Seminoles (13-0) lost star quarterback Jordan Travis to a season-ending injury two weeks ago, but continued to win with a backup and then a third-string quarterback. The committee, though, is instructed to judge teams for what they are heading into the playoff and decided FSU without Travis is not among the best four in the country.
“Devastated,” Travis posted. “Heartbroken. In so much disbelief right now, I wish my leg broke earlier in the season, so y’all could see this team is much more than the quarterback. I thought results matter. 13-0 and this roster matches up across any team in those top-4 rankings. I am so sorry. Go Noles!”
